When should you use Rules?

You can create "Rules" for the price of your product variants if you want different pricing to apply for certain quantities of product variants.

For example, you may have a pizza with the product variant group “Toppings” where 3 any toppings (product variant values) are free, but any additional toppings would cost $2.

In this case, you would use Rules.

When should you not use Rules?

You should not use Rules if you want certain Product Variant Values to cost more than others.

This can cause the pricing to be inconsistent, as Rules will override prices, and Rules will always apply in the sequence in which the order is placed.

For example, let’s say you have a mix of pizza toppings where you want your first two toppings to be free, then any subsequent ones costs $3. However, you want the chicken topping to cost $4, regardless of what else has been selected.

The problem with applying the Rule in this scenario is that:

  • For some customers, the chicken topping might be selected first - hence be free

  • For other customers, the chicken topping might be selected last - hence cost $3

If you wanted a certain product variant value to have a certain price, do not use Product Variant Rules. Instead, set the prices in the Product Variant Value table.

Example

NOTE: If you are using Product Variant Rules and you have ticked Include Quantity (for your Product Variant), you must also tick Do not consolidate (for your Product Variant).

First 3 options are free, subsequent ones are $2 each

Let's say you sell pizzas, with 10 total topping options (10 product variant values). Customers can select any 3 toppings for free, but any subsequent ones are $2 each.

This is how you would set it up:

1. As per the usual procedure, create a Product Variant Group, (e.g. "Toppings").

2. Create your Product Variant Values, (e.g. "Ham", "Eggplant", "Cheese" etc.).

3. Add your  Product (e.g. "Pizza")

4. Click New Rule

5. Enter the Minimum Quantity as 1

6. Enter the Maximum Quantity as 3

7. Set the Discount Type as Discount Percent

8. Change the Value to 100. This means that there is a 100% discount for the first three selections that your customers makes (free).

9. Click New Rule

10. Enter the Minimum Quantity as 4

11. Enter the Maximum Quantity as 10

12. Set the Discount Type as Fixed Value

13. Change the Value to 3. This means that every selection, from the 4th one to the 10th one, will cost $3 each.

Any Variant Value beyond the range of these rules will be free, so make sure you cover the whole range of Variant Values that you want the rule to apply to.

14. Save.

15. On your POS, sync all products and extras.

You're done! You may wish to create a test order to verify that the rule is working the way you expect it to.
