How Tap To Pay works on Nomni POS for Android, how it is set up with Tyro, and what to do if a payment result is unknown.

Quick answer: Tap To Pay lets an Android device take contactless card payments without a separate terminal. With Tyro, it is set up in Settings > Payment Methods > Tap To Pay: turn on Enable Tap To Pay, then use Authorise Tap To Pay, Select Location and Connect Reader. If a payment result is unknown, check with the customer, then tap Approved or Declined.

This article is for venue owners and managers using Nomni POS or Nomni Kiosk on a supported Android device.

Before you start

  • Tap To Pay must be turned on for your account. Contact Nomni Support to check if it is available for your venue and device.

  • For Tyro, embedded payments must be turned on in your Tyro portal first.

  • The device needs NFC and an internet connection.

Set up Tap To Pay with Tyro

  1. On the POS, go to Settings > Payment Methods and open Tap To Pay.

  2. Turn on Enable Tap To Pay.

  3. Tap Authorise Tap To Pay and sign in to Tyro when asked.

  4. Tap Get Locations, then choose your location under Select Location.

  5. Tap Connect Reader.

What you should see: "Tyro reader is connected successfully" and the reader under Connected reader.

Admin Settings opens Tyro's own settings for the reader.

Take a payment

  1. On the pay screen, choose Tap To Pay.

  2. Ask the customer to tap their card or phone on the device.

  3. Wait for the result.

What you should see: The payment approved and the sale completed.

If the result is unknown

If the connection drops, the POS may show "The payment result is unknown, please check with customer if the payment was successful" (Tyro) or "Unable to determine payment status, please check with the customer if the payment was successfully processed" (Adyen Tap to Pay).

  1. Ask the customer to check their banking app for the charge.

  2. If they were charged, tap Approved (Tyro) or Force close with approved payment (Adyen Tap to Pay).

  3. If they were not charged, tap Declined (Tyro) or Payment failed (Adyen Tap to Pay) and take payment again.

Tap To Pay not available?

  • "Tyro reader is not connected, tap to pay is not available": go back to Settings > Payment Methods > Tap To Pay and tap Connect Reader.

  • "Unable to get locations": check embedded payments are turned on in your Tyro portal, then tap Get Locations again.

  • Check NFC is on and the device is online.
