How to route dockets to printers or KDS by table area

Send orders from each area of your venue, such as the bar or restaurant, to its own printer or kitchen screen.

Quick answer: On Nomni POS for iPad, each printer can be limited to orders from chosen table maps (for example Bar or Restaurant). Nomni POS for Android can't do this yet. Instead, use POS Locations (routing by the device that sends the order) or a KDS filtered to a table map with its own printer.

This article is for venue managers using table maps (Restaurant Mode) with Nomni POS and Nomni KDS.

Before you start

  • You need access to Nomni Console and the Master POS.

  • Set up your table maps first, one per area (for example Bar and Restaurant).

  • Set up your printers and Printer Locations as normal. See Printer Locations.

  • Check which device you use: the table-map printer filter is on Nomni POS for iPad only.

Option 1: Limit a printer to some table maps (Nomni POS for iPad)

  1. On the Master iPad, tap the printer icon at the top of the screen.

  2. Tap the gear icon next to the printer you want to limit.

  3. Tap Table Maps and choose the table maps this printer should print for (for example Bar).

  4. Save, then do the same for the other area's printer (for example Restaurant).

  5. Leave Table Maps empty on any printer that should print for every table.

  6. Send a test order from a table in each area.

What you should see: an order from a Bar table prints only at printers set to Bar (or with no table maps set). It doesn't print at a printer set only to Restaurant.

Tip: give each printer a clear name by tapping its name at the top of the printer popup, for example "Kitchen - Bar".

Option 2: Route by the device that sends the order (Nomni POS for iPad or Android)

Use this if each area has its own POS or waiter pad. The docket follows the device, not the table.

  1. In Nomni Console, open Print Settings > Printer Locations and check your products are on "sorting" locations (for example Kitchen, Drinks).

  2. Open Stock Management > Locations, click Add New Location and create one per area (for example Bar POS, Restaurant POS).

  3. Back in Printer Locations, add one printer location for each actual printer (for example Kitchen Bar, Kitchen Restaurant). Don't attach these to products.

  4. Expand a sorting location (arrow), click Add New Record, choose the Location (where the order is made) and the Target (Printer) Location (where it prints). Repeat for each area.

  5. On the Master POS, go to Settings > Sync and run: Sync receipt templates from Nomni Console, SYNC LOCATION INFO and SYNC ALL PRODUCTS AND EXTRAS FROM BACKEND.

  6. On each ordering device, open Device Options and set its Location.

  7. On the Master, connect each printer to its actual printer location.

Full steps: Locations for POS.

Option 3: Use a KDS screen per area (Nomni KDS)

  1. On the KDS for that area, open Settings > Advanced and set Table Maps to that area's table maps (or All Table Maps).

  2. Leave Settings > Device Setup > Location on All Locations if this screen should show every item for that area.

  3. If the area needs paper dockets too, connect a printer to that KDS (Printers tab > Discover, turn on the printer) and set up a completion docket template. See How to print KDS completion dockets.

What you should see: the KDS shows only orders from its table maps. Completion dockets print at its printer.

When it's working: Orders from each area go to that area's printer or screen. Orders from other areas don't.

If something goes wrong

  • Orders still print in both areas (iPad): check the other printer's Table Maps setting. A printer with no table maps prints for every table.

  • Option 1 isn't there: you're on Nomni POS for Android, which doesn't have this setting yet. Use Option 2 or 3.

  • QR or online orders go to the wrong area with Option 2: POS Locations follow the ordering device, so orders that don't come from a POS device may not follow them. Use Option 1 or 3.

  • Nothing prints at all: see How to fix POS printers that stop printing.
