Cash drawer won't open, or keeps opening, on Nomni POS (iPad)

Fix a cash drawer that won't open (often because the receipt printer is down) or opens when you don't want it to.

Quick answer: The cash drawer opens through your receipt printer, so if the printer isn't printing the drawer won't open: print a test page first, then check the drawer cable is firmly in the printer's drawer port. If the drawer opens when it shouldn't, see part 2 below.

Your cash drawer is plugged into your receipt printer, and Nomni POS opens it by sending a signal through that printer. If the receipt printer isn't working, the drawer won't open either. Fixing the printer usually fixes the drawer.

Pick what you see:

  • The drawer won't open (on its own or when you tap OPEN): go to part 1.

  • Staff get "No Access to This Function" when they try to open it: see Staff can't open the cash drawer on Nomni POS.

  • The drawer opens when you don't want it to: go to part 2.

1. The cash drawer won't open

  1. Check the receipt printer prints. Tap the printer icon in the top bar, tap the printer that prints your receipts and bills, then tap PRINT next to Test Printer. If nothing prints, fix the printer first using Printer not printing, not found or missing from the printer list on Nomni POS (iPad). Once the printer prints again, the drawer will open again.

  2. Check the drawer cable. The cable from the drawer must be firmly plugged into the drawer port on the back of the receipt printer (often labelled DK). It looks like a phone plug. Make sure it isn't in the network port.

  3. Check this iPad has a receipt printer. Every iPad keeps its own printer list. On the iPad where the drawer won't open, tap the printer icon, tap the receipt printer and check its Printer Locations include the POS (counter) location.

If no printer on this iPad has the POS location, this iPad can't open the drawer. Add the POS location to the printer the drawer is plugged into.

  4. Test it. Tap the printer icon and tap OPEN next to Cash Register. Staff can only do this when setting B7 (Allow Staff To Open Cash Drawer) is on. Otherwise a manager logs in.

  5. Expecting it to open on every payment? On the Master POS, go to Settings > System and search for C6 (Open Cash Drawer Upon Credit Transaction) and C7 (Open Cash Drawer Upon Cash Transaction). Turn on the ones you want, then go to Settings > Sync and tap MASTER SYNC.

What you should see: the drawer opens when you tap OPEN and when a payment needs it.

Need the drawer open right now while the printer is down? Most cash drawers can be opened with their key.

2. The cash drawer keeps opening

  • It opens when order dockets print. If your receipt printer also prints order dockets, it may open the drawer when an order comes in. Tap the printer icon, open that printer's settings and set Number of Buzzes to 0. Dockets still print, and the drawer still opens when you finish a payment.

  • It opens on every card payment. Go to Settings > System, search for C6 and turn it off.

  • It opens on every cash payment. Go to Settings > System, search for C7 and turn it off.

  • It opens when staff use the Fast Pay button. Setting A35 (Enable Fast Pay Button) checks out a cash payment in one tap and opens the drawer. Turn A35 off if you don't want this.

  • After changing a setting on the Master POS, go to Settings > Sync and tap MASTER SYNC.
