Using the "excluding list" in the Product Variant Group

In ABACUS , you can create a list of exclusions for product variants when most of the values are shared between products, but certain options should be excluded for specific items. This is especially useful when products have many common modifications but need slight differences without creating entirely new variant groups.

Why Use Exclusions for Product Variants?

If you have a product that mostly shares the same modifications or extras as other items, but you want to exclude a few options, using Exclusions saves you from having to create a completely separate product variant group. For example:

  • Long Black Coffee might share the same coffee modifications as a Latte but doesn’t include milk options like soy or almond milk.

Rather than creating a new group for Long Black, you can use the same variant group as other coffee drinks and simply exclude the milk options.

How to Set Up Exclusions for Product Variants

  1. Go to the Backend: Log into the ABACUS backend system.

  2. Navigate to Products: Go to Products > Product Variants.

  3. Select the Product: Find the product for which you want to set exclusions (e.g., Long Black).

  4. Edit Product Variant Group: Instead of creating a new variant group, use the one shared with other products (e.g., Coffee Modifications).

  5. Set Exclusions: In the product's variant settings, specify the variant values you want to exclude for that particular product (e.g., exclude Soy Milk and Almond Milk for Long Black).

  6. Save Changes: Save the product with the exclusions in place.

See that the “Long Black” (above) has identical Product Variant Values to the “Latte” (below), except for “Soy milk” and “Almond milk”.
