Card surcharges in Australia from 1 October 2026: what to do in your POS

On Australian-dollar accounts, Nomni POS (iPad) automatically stops applying Visa, Mastercard, EFTPOS and All Cards surcharges from 1 October 2026, and won't let you save new ones. General surcharges, such as public holiday and weekend surcharges, still work.

  1. On the Master POS, go to Settings > Sync and tap SYNC PAYMENT INFO. Repeat on every other iPad. This makes sure each iPad has the latest surcharge settings.

  2. Go to Settings > Credit Card Surcharge. If you still have surcharges for other card types, such as American Express, Diners, JCB or UnionPay, Nomni POS doesn't remove these for you. Check whether you're allowed to keep them, and if not, tap each one and tap Delete.

  3. Go to Dropdown Menu > Surcharge Management and check none of your general surcharges is really a card fee (for example one named "card fee"). General surcharges aren't blocked automatically.

  4. If your card terminal adds its own surcharge (for example Tyro), Nomni POS doesn't control this. Ask your terminal provider to turn it off. See Tyro – Exclude Surcharges.

  5. Take a test card sale and check the receipt shows no card surcharge.

For online ordering, the backend Sales > Surcharge settings also apply to online orders. Remove any card surcharges there too, then place a test online order. For more detail, see Card surcharges from 1 October 2026: what to change in Nomni POS. Nomni can't give legal advice. If you're unsure which surcharges you can keep, check with your adviser or the RBA.

General surcharges (public holiday, weekend and others)

Go to Dropdown Menu > Surcharge Management.

Add a general surcharge

  1. Tap Add New.

  2. Enter the Surcharge Name and Surcharge Rate (Percentage or Flat Rate).

  3. (Optional) Enter the Start Date and End Date, Order Type and Days of the week. With no dates, the surcharge applies at all times on the days you select.

  4. Tap Save.

Public holiday surcharge

  1. Add a general surcharge as above, named for the holiday (for example "QLD public holiday 15%").

  2. Set the Start Date and End Date to the holiday only.

  3. Tap Save, then sync each iPad.

Weekend surcharge

  1. Add a general surcharge and select only the Days of the week it applies (for example Sunday).

  2. Leave the dates empty if it should apply every week. If you set an End Date, the surcharge stops after that date.

  3. Tap Save.

Turn off, edit or delete a general surcharge

  • Use the toggle to turn a surcharge on or off.

  • Tap a surcharge, change the details and tap Save, or tap Delete.

Credit card surcharges (outside Australia, or card types still allowed)

Go to Settings > Credit Card Surcharge.

  1. Tap Add New.

  2. Select the Credit Card Type, or All Cards for the same rate on every card.

  3. Enter the Surcharge Rate (Percentage or Flat Rate) and, optionally, Amount Min and Amount Max.

  4. Tap Save.

On Australian-dollar accounts, Visa, Mastercard, EFTPOS and All Cards can't be saved from 1 October 2026.

Troubleshooting

  • A surcharge applied on the wrong day or at the wrong venue: open it and check its dates, days of the week and order type. With no dates, it applies on every selected day.

  • A weekend surcharge stopped applying: check it doesn't have an End Date that has passed.

  • Another iPad still shows the old surcharge: run SYNC PAYMENT INFO on that iPad.

  • Add New does nothing: update the app, check your user role can edit surcharges, or ask an admin.

Still not working?

Contact us in the chat and include your venue name, which surcharge (name and rate), the order or receipt number where it was wrong, the date and time, and what you've already tried.

Holiday or weekend surcharge not applying

  1. In Nomni Console, open the surcharge and check the days or dates it applies to, including the public holiday date.

  2. Check it applies to the right order types and isn't excluded for the categories you are selling.

  3. On the POS, go to Settings > Sync > Sync Payment Info, or run Master Sync.

  4. Place a test order on the day. If it still doesn't apply, send us the surcharge name, the date and an example order number.
